I&TS Student Perspective - Circulation

Our first student employee blog post comes from Nigel Hemmings in the Circulation department.  Nigel is a senior majoring in English and minoring in Computer Science.  After graduation he plans to attend graduate school to receive his MLIS degree (yes, we are very pleased by this!)

Perhaps it’s just me, but I enjoy being busy and actually feeling like I’m working when on duty as opposed to arriving on the job and facing three to four hours of nothing to do. At the front desk, however, there is almost always some task that needs doing, thing that needs cleaning, or a librarian or a staff member that needs assisting. This way, even if I’m not helping a student, I’m always pleasantly busy.

Another enjoyable part of my job is that I’m learning as I work. Not many people outside the circulation environment are familiar with how the Library of Congress Classification system works--I know that I wasn’t before I started--but by helping people find the books they need, I have a better idea of where to find things. Before working at the circulation desk, for example, I wouldn't have thought to look for Dashiell Hammett’s work in the PS section; but now that I know PS is the Library of Congress’ designation for works of American Literature, it doesn’t surprise me that Red Harvest would be there.

The final--and probably my favorite--part of working for circulation that I enjoy is my immediate satisfaction with my work. When people come up to me for help, I always have the wonderful feeling that the work I’m doing, no matter how insignificant, is helping them access the resources they need.
