Please support the I&TS Relay for Life Team

It's Relay time again! Time to raise money in the fight against cancer. Last year our team was one of the top five fundraising teams at PLU! Let's do it again. Please consider joining our team and do some fundraising. Or please donate to our team; any amount of support is appreciated and needed. The goal this year is $1000. Thank you for your support!

I relay for my dear friend John. John was full of life, love, and adventure, but cancer sadly cut his life all too short.

Thank you for your support, Lizz

Your Winterfest Donations 2015

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is over and we are speeding toward Christmas. But before we get to Christmas we need to stop and celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Winterfest. This yearly celebration is a Parkland-Spanaway community event that inspires hope by connecting low-income families with gifts and resources during the holiday season.

Thanks to your generosity during the Thanksgiving Basket Drive, I was able to use the remaining funds to purchase the following gifts:
  • Skateboard
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • 3 Disney Princess Dolls
  • Minnion Art Kit
  • Bath and Body Gift Kits for Teen Boy & Girl
  • Educational Puppy Toy
If you would like a closer look at the toys you purchased please check out the Winterfest box at
the front of the library.

Winterfest serves local families by offering a place to share refreshments and a children’s fair with games, face painting, a visit with Santa, and crafts. Parents will have the opportunity to shop for holiday gifts for their children, connect with local resources, and access coats, socks, and personal hygiene items.

Another Successful Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Drive

Thanks to all of you who participated in the annual
Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Drive.  Our baskets
were picked up early this morning by a member of
the School of Nursing's Delta Iota Chi and she
couldn't have been happier.

Thank you for bringing in the majority of items on our list and for purchasing one item for each basket.  Ann said it made her trip to the grocery store so much easier and she really appreciated that.

I would also like to thank all those who donated money so that turkeys and other items could be added to the baskets.

Because of your generosity we collected more than $200 in cash.  As in past years the remaining funds will be used to purchase gifts for Winterfest.  Last year over 250 families attended this event and over 830 children received gifts and coats as well as resources for further community connections.

Thanks for making this years Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Drive the best year ever!

Wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!

Wanda: A Life Remembered

Wanda Margaret Harrington
June 4th, 1775 - June 15th, 2015
Today the world lost an amazing soul.

Wanda Margaret Harrington was born on a hot summer day in London, 1775. Shortly thereafter, her family was thrown into prison on suspicion of aiding the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. Wanda spent the next 50-60 years of her life scrounging for scraps of fish food and fighting off gangs of street urchins.

Not much is known of Wanda between 1830-1900.
Several sources point to opium dens and jail cells.

Harrington resurfaced in April of 1912 after she had stowed away on some huge new ship. Here she meets an upperclass Atlantic Cod named Jack Dawson and falls in love. As with many of the relationships in Wanda’s life, a giant iceberg emerges.

During the madness of the crash, Jack and Wanda were unable to secure a spot on one of the lifeboats. Holding fins, they jumped into the icy Atlantic waters with the hope of finding a buoyant object. They found a door that could only hold one of them and Jack kicked her off. Then they realized they could just swim, cause, you know, they’re fish. Wanda arrived in New York and promptly broke off her relationship with Jack.

Wanda fought in both world wars, receiving multiple commendations for bravery. She also went and saved some guy named Ryan. Tom Hanks came with. They were lifelong friends. Wanda returned to the States and spent the next few years relaxing with her new boyfriend, Matt Damon.

The 60s and 70s flew by in a haze of drugs and rock concerts. Wanda can be seen in many iconic photos from Woodstock. She was cool, man.

During the early 1990s, Wanda re-kindled her relationship with Jack Dawson (who had changed his name to Jordan Belfort) and did more drugs. Later she realized Belfort was doing some highly illegal actions, so Wanda turned states and was granted witness protection.

Wanda lived the rest of her life as an office fish at Pacific Lutheran University, bestowing joy and wisdom to all she met. She will be missed.

Wanda Margaret Harrington passed away at 1:16 PM on June 15th, 2015. She was 240 gold-fish years old.

Help Lizz support the American Cancer Society!

American Cancer Society | Relay For Life

Lizz is supporting the American Cancer Society and participating in Relay For Life® on campus. Lizz would love for you to join her team. Every Relay For Life event is a time for our school to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to this disease, and raise funds and awareness to help end cancer forever.
This year is especially important to Lizz because she and her husband, Erik, named their son Asher John after her dear friend John Bruton who died way too soon because of cancer. He was a special, lovely soul whose legacy she wanted to share with her son.
By joining her Relay For Life team and helping them fundraise, more people will:
  • Have the information and tools they need to avoid getting cancer or find the disease early, when it's easiest to treat
  • Have a place to turn for help 24/7
  • Benefit from the progress being made toward finding cancer's causes and cures
  • Get access to lifesaving screenings and treatment
Too many people will be touched by cancer this year. Our Relay For Life event is our opportunity to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. She hopes you will join her!

Colleagues,

Fran just informed me that Gail Egbers, librarian extraordinaire, received notification from Laree Winer from the Student Life Office that she was recognized by a PLU student as being the person on campus who has been the most helpful in their success at the university.

Laree wrote to Gail:

"First year students just completed the spring check-up survey portion of the MAP-Works Program .  In case you are unfamiliar with MAP-Works it is a student success program utilized by the Student Life Division in order to identify students who may be at risk for poor academic performance and/or retention.  One of the questions on the MAP-Works survey is: name the person on campus who has been most helpful in your success.  I am writing to share that student XXXX XXX indicated that person was you."

I &TS colleagues, please take time to congratulate Gail on this exceptional recognition.
